How to make an Instagram account easily
How to make an Instagram account
Introduction
Instagram is a fun and easy place to share photos and videos with your friends, family, and followers. But what if you don't have any followers yet? Or if you want to start posting about a new topic or activity? In this guide, we'll show you how to set up an Instagram account from scratch—the first step in using the popular social media platform.
Get the app.
If you're new to Instagram, download the app from your phone's app store (Apple Store or Google Play). If you have an Android phone, search for "Instagram" in Google Play. If you have an iPhone, go to the Apple Store and search for "Instagram."
Once it's downloaded, open up the app on your phone and sign into your account using Facebook.
Make an account
-
Log into the app. You can find Instagram in your app store and download it for free. After installing, open the app on your phone or log in to your existing account.
-
Make an account using a phone number or email address. If you don't have a Facebook account, you can still sign up for Instagram with just a phone number or email address—you won't need to link anything to it from Facebook. To do this:
-
Tap Sign Up For Instagram and then tap either Create New Account or Use Existing Email Address if you already have one in mind; otherwise tap Skip This Step (it's okay!)
-
Enter information requested by the registration form as needed; this includes name, gender/birthday/location/avatar photo etc., then tap Next when done
-
Enter more information needed at times depending on where they are located (country), whether they want ads shown (yes), etc.; these can be accessed later if desired through Settings > Privacy > Advertising
Add your information.
The next step is adding your information. We want to make sure that people can find you and also trust that you’re a real person.
First, add a profile picture. If it’s just a blank square, that means no one will know who you are! Make sure your name is visible so people know what they can find on Instagram.
Next, add your username—this should be easy because we saved it in the last step! You could also use something like “@username” or “#username” if you wanted to include hashtags in your handle too.
Finally, write something about yourself under “Bio”—maybe about where you live or work or what kind of food interests (ahem) you….
Choose a username and profile picture.
Choose a username and profile picture.
Your username is the name that you appear under in the social media platform, so it should be short and easy to remember. However, it should also be unique enough so that your account doesn't get confused with someone else's. For instance, if you're going by “Bob Smith” on Twitter and Instagram, make sure your Instagram handle doesn't include BobSmith as well—you could end up posting something on Twitter that also shows up on Instagram (and vice versa).
As for your profile picture? You've got some options here! It can be an image of yourself (i.e., selfie) or an object or concept that represents who you are; there are no hard-and-fast rules about this part of the process.* Just keep in mind that whatever photo(s) you choose should reveal something about who *you* are as a person--not just what makes *you* look good! That said: choosing an attractive photo will definitely help boost engagement levels early on...unless those engagement levels aren't desirable yet (e.g., if they're low).
Explore.
To find more accounts to follow, you can use the explore tab. It will show you a list of popular accounts that are related to your interests. If there's an account that looks interesting but isn't in your main feed, tap on their profile picture and tap the follow button. You can also use the hashtag search bar at the top of your screen—just type in a keyword or phrase, like #fashionblogger or #amazingfoodporn—and it will bring up relevant accounts for you to follow!
You can also find specific users by searching their name directly in the search bar at the top of your screen. Just type in their username and then hit enter/click on "search." This is helpful if there are multiple people with similar usernames (like @AnnieSwanson) or when someone who isn't following back doesn't show up under "people I'm following."
Upload a photo or video.
Upload a photo or video
To upload a photo or video, tap the camera icon in the center of the screen. Then, select an image from your camera roll, take a new pic with Instagram’s built-in camera or choose from one of your existing photos (or videos). You can also switch back to this screen by tapping on the three horizontal lines in the top left corner of your feed.
Once you have chosen what you want to post, tap “Next” at the bottom right. Here is where you will decide whether or not this photo will be public or private by choosing either “Public” or “Private” under Privacy settings located at the bottom of this page. If you choose to make it public, then anyone who follows you will be able to see it by clicking on their profile picture which should have changed into three dots as shown below:
